Kafanchan Campus in Crisis: The Systematic Emasculation of a University and the Fight for Its Survival

By His Priestly Excellence, Rev’d Gideon Mutum

A university campus is more than just a collection of buildings. It is an engine of social mobility, a hub for peacebuilding, and a catalyst for regional development. This was the promise held by the establishment of the Kaduna State University (KASU) Kafanchan Campus—a strategic intervention to bring quality tertiary education, foster inclusion, and drive progress in Southern Kaduna.

Tragically, that promise has been broken. What was conceived as a symbol of hope and balance within Kaduna State’s educational landscape now stands as a monument to systemic neglect. KASU Kafanchan Campus is fighting for its very survival, not due to a lack of potential, but because of a pattern of deliberate actions that have pushed it to the brink of collapse.

A Dream Deferred: From Modest Growth to Managed Decline

Created to decongest the main campus and stimulate development in Southern Kaduna, Kafanchan Campus initially showed promise. However, this progress was swiftly reversed by policy shifts, security narratives, and administrative decisions that systematically undermined its foundation. The campus has been subjected to a quiet, persistent emasculation, manifesting in several critical areas:

  • Chronic Underfunding & Decay: The campus grapples with dilapidated buildings, inadequate facilities, and a stunning lack of basic infrastructure. Most telling is the total absence of a backup power supply—not even solar street lights—in an age of renewable energy, branding it an abandoned outpost.
  • The Politics of Staff Deployment: A deliberate refusal by some staff to take up posts in Kafanchan, coupled with management’s failure to enforce postings, has led to acute staff shortages, overwork, and crippled academic programming.
  • Instrumentalizing Insecurity: While insecurity is addressed with reinforced security elsewhere, in Kafanchan, it has been used as a pretext for closure or relocation of academic activities. This discriminatory response reinforces marginalization.
  • Deliberate Depopulation: The most damaging blow has been the drastic reduction or outright refusal of admissions. By choking off its student population, the campus is being quietly suffocated, deprived of the vitality and justification it needs to thrive.
  • Weak Advocacy & Policy Silence: The emasculation has been enabled by weak, uncoordinated advocacy from key stakeholders and a deafening policy silence from the government, fueling credible rumors of a backdoor relocation.

A Litmus Test for Equity and Justice

The fate of KASU Kafanchan Campus is a litmus test for equity, inclusion, and justice in Kaduna State. Allowing it to wither is not just an academic failure; it is a profound moral failure. The people of Southern Kaduna welcomed this institution as a symbol of belonging. Its abandonment sends a opposite, deeply damaging message.

The Path to Revitalization: A Call to Action

Revival is possible, but it demands urgent, concerted action. We propose a clear path forward:

  1. Governor’s Urgent Intervention: His Excellency, Governor Uba Sani, whose administration champions unity and inclusive development, must issue a decisive policy statement affirming the government’s commitment to strengthening Kafanchan Campus.
  2. Restore Admissions: University management must intentionally offer admissions to rebuild a vibrant, critical mass of students.
  3. Immediate Infrastructure Investment: Prioritize power, starting with solar energy, and rehabilitate key facilities to restore security and academic dignity.
  4. Enforce & Incentivize Staff Postings: Implement clear posting policies with tangible incentives like housing and rural allowances.
  5. Strategic, Unified Advocacy: Groups like SOKAPU must lead sustained, strategic lobbying. The host community, students, and elected representatives must unite to demand action and invest in the campus’s future.

The time for silence and neglect is over. The systematic emasculation of KASU Kafanchan Campus must end before it becomes extinction. We call on all people of conscience, within and beyond Kaduna State, to join in demanding its immediate revitalization. The survival of this campus is essential for the future of Southern Kaduna and for the soul of Kaduna State itself.

The time to act is now.

Rev’d Gideon Mutum is the Convener of The Governor’s Assembly, Kafanchan.
